Next Level Camping

It’s pretty much a guarantee that you will have people walking up to your van to check it out in a parking lot, on a BC Ferry, or campsite. They’ll try to peer inside. They’ll stand-back and nod their heads approvingly. They’ll take a picture with their phone. Then they will most certainly ask you how far it goes on a charge. Welcome to driving a super slick new EV camper.

Charging Information

  • About 350km (230 miles) of range, depending on driving conditions. Meaning: Less if you are driving into the Rocky Mountains. If it were me planning, I’d chart out stations 275km or less apart. Trip planning could look like, finding a station that’s near a place to eat or sight see, and let the van charge while you hit that up. Then also plug in the van at your campsite.

  • The van comes with a Tesla adapter so that you can utilize their high-speed Tesla Supercharger network. You will need to download the app as well as other suggested charging apps (ChargePoint, BC Hydro EV, Electrify Canada, PlugShare)

  • It is HIGHLY recommended / violently mandated (jokes) that you reserve campsites with power hookups so that you can plug in the van. Check with your campsite ahead of time to see what they offer for hook-ups. Common hook-ups you’ll see in Canadian campsites:

    • 15amp (standard wall outlet) (the van comes with a power cord)

    • 30amp (No, 30amp charging does not equal Level 2 charging or double 15amp speeds. It simply is a power hookup style commonly offered at campsites. Yes, you can plug into it as the van comes with an adapter, but you will still be at the Level 1 speeds.

    • 50amp (Also known as a NEMA 14‑50 outlet) The van also has one of these chargers which is significantly faster than the standard wall outlet.

    • Images of the above are linked here

  • Approximate charging times:

    • 20% → 80% (commonly quoted as 10% → 80%)

      • DC Fast Charging (Tesla Fast Chargers)

        • Tesla DC Fast Chargers are 200kW. The ID Buzz caps at 170kW during peak charging so they are more than enough.

        • ~ 25 - 30 minutes (VW quoted ~26 min 10–80%) Volkswagen Canada

        • When you’re planning the driving in between campsites on your trip, we suggest planning based on the Tesla network. There are ~60 of them all over BC. Here’s the link to the Tesla Supercharging network to find the chargers you’ll need.

        • The van has a Tesla Supercharger adapter - you just need the app

      • Level 2 Charging (240 V outlet)

        • For campsites, this is the 50a hook-up

        • ~11kW and roughly 4-6 hours to go from 10% - 80% charge.

        • The van has a level 2 power cord

      • Level 1 Charging (120 V outlet)

        • For campsites, this is the 15a or 30a hook-up

        • ~1 kW and roughly 60 hours to go from 10% - 80% charge. Would actually be totally fine if you are planning on staying at the same campsite for 2-3 days before moving on.

        • The van has a standard EV power cord for wall outlets as well as a 30a plug adapter.
